Founded in 1997 (registered as a charity in 2000), the WJO has matured to become an important part of Winnipeg’s cultural landscape, reflected in the ongoing support the organization receives from the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council, the Winnipeg Foundation, and other sponsors.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>Tidal Currents: East Meets West</i> - The WJO's seventh release - features a commission between two of Canada’s most compelling writers for big band jazz: Jill Townsend and Christine Jensen. The music born of this meeting reflects on the places that meant the most to them, especially the bodies of water that surrounded them both in their youth up until the present. Townsend captures images and sounds of her east coast upbringing, unfolding into Jensen's west coast childhood memories.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The music moves into the waters surrounding them at present, including Townsend's now west coast land and waterscape and Jensen's explorations of her Montreal environs on the powerful St-Lawrence seaway. They have blended their compositions into one suite with the WJO: Tidal Currents, an East meets West Collaboration. Both composers are featured as guest artists, with Jill Townsend as conductor and Christine Jensen as soprano saxophone soloist.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Tidal Currents: East Meets West is released worldwide on <b>Chronograph Records</b>.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaT2bktsTj4lW_zfAmz__Htf877Y4egqRn-xuFfMUvTAVK34t4RYDP7wVeab6vPy8OBVx9j5PflPiMO-WBLF84frIJBVUVtNiN52cVFh5r3LO3IDoivTp4y8Q3PBJcoQMvzYwl0YpKyBDz9WuqMvk0h0aDl77MiypJycrIpEH4M88Q3skzeL1G_8zX790/s3000/WJO%20Photo%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2003" data-original-width="3000" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaT2bktsTj4lW_zfAmz__Htf877Y4egqRn-xuFfMUvTAVK34t4RYDP7wVeab6vPy8OBVx9j5PflPiMO-WBLF84frIJBVUVtNiN52cVFh5r3LO3IDoivTp4y8Q3PBJcoQMvzYwl0YpKyBDz9WuqMvk0h0aDl77MiypJycrIpEH4M88Q3skzeL1G_8zX790/s320/WJO%20Photo%203.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.winnipegjazzorchestra.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.winnipegjazzorchestra.com/</a><br /></span><p></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-83289929874146606752024-03-06T16:13:00.002+11:002024-03-06T16:13:35.045+11:00Ernesto Cervini's contemporary jazz outfit Turboprop album release A Canadian Songbook<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGwmg-Mh7PiP9fIrmp80dZJI6xTo5TuH8k7B0BIrZXNSkGoxADhqoVOEJT7UblLTzhEvrPGUWvK9DZkmmI2LwW7i_DF4SMjHCLa5T3-zmuLaZlFqYt6EFf9aYPia9rKUXh7J1Wqi6EXZDbvijWhXiQyDdgPdcUaxAcKzo7_GCECWEriOFsZKZiTegMyBI/s1280/Album%20Cover.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1280" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGwmg-Mh7PiP9fIrmp80dZJI6xTo5TuH8k7B0BIrZXNSkGoxADhqoVOEJT7UblLTzhEvrPGUWvK9DZkmmI2LwW7i_DF4SMjHCLa5T3-zmuLaZlFqYt6EFf9aYPia9rKUXh7J1Wqi6EXZDbvijWhXiQyDdgPdcUaxAcKzo7_GCECWEriOFsZKZiTegMyBI/s320/Album%20Cover.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Following up his ambitious JUNO Award-nominated 2022 album Joy (“a compositional tour-de-force, with strong melodies scored for diverse instrumentations” — Ted Panken, DownBeat), Toronto drummer and composer <b>Ernesto Cervini</b> is proud to announce the release of <i>A Canadian Songbook</i>, a vivid, fiery, insightful exploration of music composed by Canadians. This outing finds Cervini returning to the helm of his accomplished and long-running sextet <b>Turboprop</b>, with a thick, contrapuntal three-horn sound that’s been developing over the course of three previous albums: Abundance (2018), Rev (2017) and Turboprop (2015). Turboprop’s personnel also played an important role on Joy, along with a cast of singers and members of Cervini’s other projects, notably Tetrahedron and TuneTown.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">On <i>A Canadian Songbook</i> it’s Turboprop all the way, soaring on a couple of impressive Cervini originals and arrangements of the pop/rock numbers “When I Fall” by The Barenaked Ladies and “Clumsy” by Toronto’s own Our Lady Peace. Brilliant tunes by Cervini’s contemporaries and friends, Allison Au (“Aureole”), James Hill (“Skeletons”) and Turboprop trombonist William Carn (“The Inertia of Complacency”) round out the program. “The two pop songs on the record I’ve been listening to since they were released, when I was a teenager,” Cervini says. “Allison’s and James' songs I fell in love with while working publicity for their albums,” he adds, alluding to his role as founding director of Orange Grove Publicity.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">With two saxes (Tara Davidson, Joel Frahm) and Carn’s trombone offering harmonic richness, limitless versatility and off-the-charts improvisational prowess, Cervini can tell the story of what these songs inspire in him, aided by the eloquent, formidable rhythm section partners Dan Loomis (bass) and Adrean Farrugia (piano).</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Hailed by the Vancouver Sun as “one of Canada’s premier drummer-composer-bandleaders,” Ernesto Cervini is a complete, well-rounded musician, having earned degrees from the Royal Conservatory of Music in classical piano and clarinet performance before he decided to focus his energies behind the drum kit. He has a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, a deep network of connections with the highest-echelon musicians, and a performance track record on some of the world’s hippest, most prestigious stages. Returning to Toronto in 2007 after his four years in New York, he has cemented his status as one of the leading champions of the city’s local scene and Canadian musicians more broadly.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://ernestocervini.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://ernestocervini.com/</a><br /></span></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-32522635164917323902024-02-26T14:10:00.000+11:002024-02-26T14:10:16.328+11:00 jazz quartet Peripheral Vision highly-interactive and playful album release We've Got Nothing<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYXSHyhTpQvOATdr-6KK_g6rwI8wihbSUqiDwlbuj4BWXsoQoUvKJvdRUoyx5RHglhAup_YamegaE828WDNzg-_jq2pmPCSrBqRbCmk1FnPN807AWLtyv0OLX2EjzHRSaxGEe7TfvVPVDeZasGdV2fTEJS-AJeNEVpQFb30sAgp77T48kGnZxkHJw4RqI/s1500/Cover%20Art%20(web)%20-%20Peripheral%20Vision%20-%20We've%20Got%20Nothing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1500" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYXSHyhTpQvOATdr-6KK_g6rwI8wihbSUqiDwlbuj4BWXsoQoUvKJvdRUoyx5RHglhAup_YamegaE828WDNzg-_jq2pmPCSrBqRbCmk1FnPN807AWLtyv0OLX2EjzHRSaxGEe7TfvVPVDeZasGdV2fTEJS-AJeNEVpQFb30sAgp77T48kGnZxkHJw4RqI/s320/Cover%20Art%20(web)%20-%20Peripheral%20Vision%20-%20We've%20Got%20Nothing.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Peripheral Vision</b> is one of the most exciting and innovative <b>jazz quartets</b> on the international jazz scene. Based in Toronto, Canada, the group is co-lead by long-time musical collaborators guitarist <b>Don Scott</b> and bassist <b>Michael Herring</b>. They have assembled a synergistic musical unit designed to push the boundaries of jazz while engaging the listener with a grooving, toe-tapping immediacy. Their distinctive musical voice bridges tradition and innovation, with deeply felt influences ranging from jazz, rock, classical, and improv, with a focus on dynamic group interaction.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>We’ve Got Nothing</i> is Peripheral Vision’s 2nd live album, and 6th full length release. It is a thrilling celebration of the band’s 15 years together, and marks the first time in their long creative history that Scott and Herring have co-written music together. The project was conceived during the pandemic as a way to create collaboratively; thankfully, pandemic restrictions were lifted in time for them to work together in person. They were eventually able to debut their new music at the return of their long-running monthly series at The Tranzac, one of Toronto’s most important creative music hubs. The concert series was recorded over the course of four months between January to April 2023 by Peripheral Vision’s long-time co-producer/mad scientist Jean Martin (Barnyard Records). The album is a collection of the band’s finest performances from the series, with each piece accompanied by live video filmed and edited by Good Job Hi Five (the creative team of Brittany Farhat & Matt Fong).</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Once again, Peripheral Vision has mined the intricacies of their collective neuroses for inspiration. We’ve Got Nothing is about the constantly pressing search for new sources of creativity - especially on the heels of the disruption of the pandemic. Scott and Herring drew on a range of influences for the record: Comedian Stewart Lee’s musings on lost creativity and his deft (and hilarious) incorporation of his anxiety into his routine; the influential bassist Dave Holland’s thoughts on achieving balance in life; and most importantly, the band’s 15 year history of playing and traveling together. The original working title for this project was Telling Tales Out Of School, a phrase they often use in their “Comedy Vehicle” (aka their tour van) while encouraging a policy of “Full Disclosure,” which may, on occasion, require invoking the “Cone Of Silence.”</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="http://peripheralvisionmusic.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://peripheralvisionmusic.com/</a><br /></span></p><p><br /></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-64496260278317268582024-02-19T13:43:00.000+11:002024-02-19T13:43:14.175+11:00jazz guitarist Vin Venezia album release The Venetian<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr_s_gjr9HRVZqb-e_Y4wb95YmYHtWE3HEM4QojQuQKFZdSzfTFYW0JgetKVKyewxduxydMUB5fVCpGFEh835bJ1DvoeZlhdkLJdJaE_rN690Oq0uSoXuDUAJIBPHlVFHT1eud8rfIh_1ILK0Db5HDupzai8SeGrPHrgUrWZvLQUcWPPw47cxEJsnf6Tc/s771/Vin%20Venezia%20%20-%20CD%20Cover.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="771" data-original-width="771" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr_s_gjr9HRVZqb-e_Y4wb95YmYHtWE3HEM4QojQuQKFZdSzfTFYW0JgetKVKyewxduxydMUB5fVCpGFEh835bJ1DvoeZlhdkLJdJaE_rN690Oq0uSoXuDUAJIBPHlVFHT1eud8rfIh_1ILK0Db5HDupzai8SeGrPHrgUrWZvLQUcWPPw47cxEJsnf6Tc/s320/Vin%20Venezia%20%20-%20CD%20Cover.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Meet <b>Vin Venezia</b>, an accomplished and versatile <b>guitar</b> player whose music resonates with soulful melodies and electrifying performances. It is an acoustic tribute to the complex but universal human act of migration, weaving lush, mosaic-like dreamscapes with poignant, heartrending lyrics.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">A suite of music conceptualized by the JUNO award winning saxophonist and composer <b>Allison Au</b> (pronounced “ow”), Migrations draws emotion and depth from Au’s family history of immigration to Canada: from Southern China and Malaysia on her father’s side and war-torn Poland and Israel on her mother’s side. A biracial descendant of migrants, Au’s compositional process is also informed by her personal experience of reconciling displacement, cultural identity, family legacy and the notion of home.“Migrations is one of the most important pieces of music I have created because it is so personal. It speaks to my identity as a Canadian born to immigrant parents and delves into subject matter that I previously attempted to articulate, but never found the project through which to do so.”</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Commissioned by the Royal Conservatory of Music, Migrations premiered at the 21C Music Festival at Toronto’s Koerner Hall in January 2020. Her fourth studio recording and most ambitious compositional work to date, Migrations features the musicians of Au’s longstanding quartet as the core of an expanded ensemble that includes vibraphone, string quartet, and voice. As a testament to the sentiments of traumas and upheaval shared by migrants of different backgrounds and circumstances, the lyrics of Migrations feature the words of poets including Emma LaRocque, Ruth Padel, Rae Marie Taylor, Duncan Mercredi, Chief Dan George, Langston Hughes and Wanda Coleman.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqfkG-XhIaDj_YJHfOSvleuZPTOooj5JpuA1mLrw-X5iIXs19SQtT_gPrAaip-3vFojpgfa846qAYo76vFCIxUEBMVwE3wIXGe0Fkc1gZ1xUVqc8vJSjO_TkoI7tO19R9JnIEGtsHEUah0mbJy6hfK96Kypy2lqwpi0jcdGIyyD1CBLgJYpyxcxlQE6kA/s2048/Allison%20Au2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1366" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqfkG-XhIaDj_YJHfOSvleuZPTOooj5JpuA1mLrw-X5iIXs19SQtT_gPrAaip-3vFojpgfa846qAYo76vFCIxUEBMVwE3wIXGe0Fkc1gZ1xUVqc8vJSjO_TkoI7tO19R9JnIEGtsHEUah0mbJy6hfK96Kypy2lqwpi0jcdGIyyD1CBLgJYpyxcxlQE6kA/s320/Allison%20Au2.jpg" width="213" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.allisonau.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.allisonau.com/</a><br /></span><p></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-18877851036310390572024-02-10T12:54:00.000+11:002024-02-10T12:54:10.456+11:00Miguel Espinoza Fusion album release Gabriella - roots in flamenco, classical and jazz<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWd6deJJNYnIB8fFWNnjwC8dOGss7m33u7zPAeAvi4T0SJgsooK0DZW9LXNQ902hJQJpLW0Q7ag2yvbW8FkOee4hIkmmkwWqNXt7sfe914723hNnvEjcXfthws7_wb1j0kZVS5IbOVn2_MHYXZNv0f6CuYldwUaUpQBOcEQUtgnQ4ApJdtOR3RqCdTpF0/s1418/Miguel%20Espinoza%20Fusion%20-%20CD%20Cover%20gabriella.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1418" data-original-width="1418" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWd6deJJNYnIB8fFWNnjwC8dOGss7m33u7zPAeAvi4T0SJgsooK0DZW9LXNQ902hJQJpLW0Q7ag2yvbW8FkOee4hIkmmkwWqNXt7sfe914723hNnvEjcXfthws7_wb1j0kZVS5IbOVn2_MHYXZNv0f6CuYldwUaUpQBOcEQUtgnQ4ApJdtOR3RqCdTpF0/s320/Miguel%20Espinoza%20Fusion%20-%20CD%20Cover%20gabriella.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Miguel Espinoza Fusion</b>, the collective beating heart of world-class musicians Miguel Espinoza (guitar), Dianne Betkowski (cello) and Randy Hoepker (bass) the core members, invite the listener into a rich and colorful symposium of musical traditions. DISTANCIA by <b>Solidaridad Tango</b> takes you on a journey from the despair of the pandemic to a celebration of the love and hope that kept us going through our darkest hours. “Distancia” is the Spanish word for “distance”—-this album captures the way people reach across boundaries of place and space, bridging the vast distances from Toronto to Buenos Aires to Kandy in Sri Lanka through music and poetry.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The album is an emotional roller coaster - a searing portrait of our times and a riotous answer to the divisions that keep us apart. The English lyrics and poetry by Aparna Halpé are unique in the world of tango, where songs are written almost exclusively in Spanish. They capture issues of homelessness, anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination, and the universal experiences of love and loss that haunt us all. Halpé’s compositions are a unique synthesis of multicultural musical influences, while being situated clearly within the language of tango.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The album celebrates emerging women tango composers such as Pétalo Selser and Eva Wolff, while also tipping its hat to the iconoclast of <b>contemporary tango</b>, Julián Peralta. DISTANCIA ends with a poetic land acknowledgement, signaling the band’s commitment to reconciliation practices, an approach further demonstrated in the powerful album art by Oneida visual artist Mo Thunder.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">DISTANCIA rocks out with tango, rock, candombe, murga, milonga, and vannam rhythms and melodies, embodying the diversity of this band of women who are changing the face and sound of tango. Described as “bringing tango forward” by Laura Fernandez, host of Jazz FM 91’s Café Latino, this album by Canada’s all-woman tango band is a passionate embrace of life and death, and of the kind of inspiration that arrives at 3AM in the morning, wherever you are in the world.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK80T7aqiZWhcW_2poanNA3CaAv8GjL_WO5nHBmniGTEpji2uW-QeXRktE5x0HHxvH12uIxh5F0Y4Ne3TGNm3KZ4WzOxJSTj8rz1F6pwgNTOREUhviXv_D8gZwGQlRsloXshkIt6gpCIGoWWeBk7YEAT36ty6_PDRBa9ysg0-GVEWYCQo6dD26v0Azpgk/s3600/Solidaridad%20Band%20Photo%20BEACH%20(6mb).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2401" data-original-width="3600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK80T7aqiZWhcW_2poanNA3CaAv8GjL_WO5nHBmniGTEpji2uW-QeXRktE5x0HHxvH12uIxh5F0Y4Ne3TGNm3KZ4WzOxJSTj8rz1F6pwgNTOREUhviXv_D8gZwGQlRsloXshkIt6gpCIGoWWeBk7YEAT36ty6_PDRBa9ysg0-GVEWYCQo6dD26v0Azpgk/s320/Solidaridad%20Band%20Photo%20BEACH%20(6mb).jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://solidaridadtango.ca/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://solidaridadtango.ca/</a><br /></span><p></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-29683517468821597942024-01-24T19:31:00.001+11:002024-01-24T19:31:18.532+11:00vocalist/songwriter Danette McMahon releases her album No More Excuses<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3h2UmoTSzUqd21v284lSTNyvLrEBvGUB30MfgLnvmEUCvpOthXMwtZCp6Pi3KdKlImzNOMYOgTCqSbEBn-uuYItXOI7YDNUveH8VQc8spShB5S1oTRheF23-mUaHi_ctDXls4uE4PxO4e8-VDi4xD7dDFxobY_mLVsDsQSmw3qunXpWqxuoxg3DTofnA/s1500/Danette%20McMahon%20-%20CD%20Cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1493" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3h2UmoTSzUqd21v284lSTNyvLrEBvGUB30MfgLnvmEUCvpOthXMwtZCp6Pi3KdKlImzNOMYOgTCqSbEBn-uuYItXOI7YDNUveH8VQc8spShB5S1oTRheF23-mUaHi_ctDXls4uE4PxO4e8-VDi4xD7dDFxobY_mLVsDsQSmw3qunXpWqxuoxg3DTofnA/s320/Danette%20McMahon%20-%20CD%20Cover.jpg" width="319" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">From the moment seven-year-old Danette McMahon’s voice echoed through a microphone in Cleveland, Texas, it was clear that her star was pointed towards music. Her childhood was a symphony of evolving talents; from mastering the clarinet in junior high to enchanting audiences with her voice. Danette’s musical journey was marked by pivotal choices, such as turning down an invitation from The University of Texas to join their marching band and instead accepting a scholarship at Houston Baptist University for music and drama.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The summer before her college debut, Danette took a leap that would catapult her into the limelight. Joining the chorus line at The Houston Music Theatre, she began a meteoric rise in the music industry. Between 1972-1974, she toured across North America and the Virgin Islands with Sidro’s Armada, a journey that culminated in a Las Vegas Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2010.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Danette’s stage presence was magnetic, sharing the limelight with icons like Oscar winner Rita Moreno and jazz/blues legend Joe Williams. Her versatility shone through at the “Jazz on the Grazz” Festival, where she opened for notables like Freddie Hubbard and Spyro Gyra. In Houston, she was the voice that introduced audiences to stars such as Marvin Hamlisch and Dionne Warwick, performing with The Bob Henschen Band.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">A highlight of her career was in 1995, when she was invited to sing with The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra at Meryl Streep’s Connecticut estate. That same year, Danette delved into acting, portraying Emma Barnum in the Disney movie POWDER, alongside Mary Steenburgen and Jeff Goldblum.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">In 2003, Danette’s artistic journey took a new turn as she ventured into songwriting. This path led her back to academia, where she studied arranging and composition under Joe LoCascio at Houston Community College.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Her album, <i>No More Excuses</i>, is a tapestry of her life experiences. Each song, penned by Danette, resonates with warmth, wit, and candor, inviting listeners into her personal narrative. Her unique renditions of “You and Me” by Dave Matthews and Oasis’ “Wonderwall” showcase her vocal skills and her skill as an arranger. No More Excuses is a journey through the life of an artist who has honed her craft with passion and resilience, offering her voice to the world, unapologetically and without excuses.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://danettemcmahon.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://danettemcmahon.com/</a><br /></span></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-70377714101267637702024-01-09T15:13:00.003+11:002024-01-09T15:13:57.024+11:00 evocative and interactive album from contemporary jazz artists Philippe Côté and François Bourassa entitled Confluence<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT_YXc7eGNpmrVGXQ_i9m03v-6bqIp8UezLQDTaoSNp5j1nonhdupqsRivNeArNCyHcWSgpXQX3WsNIq5gnIc3syy2g09g1N078SSUB_1eDfTImA4mH9AtVoCk2TUrf33eLprvaFzsIdOKkafD6GNkTpsKAennbC3bFQWaHRG3X7XpCXFZdFUkWSeMLOA/s1500/Cover%20Art%20(Lo-Res)%20-%20Philippe%20Co%CC%82te%CC%81%20&%20Franc%CC%A7ois%20Bourassa%20-%20Confluence.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1500" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT_YXc7eGNpmrVGXQ_i9m03v-6bqIp8UezLQDTaoSNp5j1nonhdupqsRivNeArNCyHcWSgpXQX3WsNIq5gnIc3syy2g09g1N078SSUB_1eDfTImA4mH9AtVoCk2TUrf33eLprvaFzsIdOKkafD6GNkTpsKAennbC3bFQWaHRG3X7XpCXFZdFUkWSeMLOA/s320/Cover%20Art%20(Lo-Res)%20-%20Philippe%20Co%CC%82te%CC%81%20&%20Franc%CC%A7ois%20Bourassa%20-%20Confluence.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Just as two streams join to become a single river, multi-reedist <b>Philippe Côté</b> and pianist <b>François Bourassa</b> have united to record the duo album Confluence. With Côté’s titular five- movement suite as a focal point, this recording represents a unique musical universe with improvisation at the forefront. Inspired by jazz and contemporary classical music, the Montreal-based duo present a selection of compositions that are at once mysterious, emotive and accessible.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>Confluence</i> is not a textbook example of a piano-saxophone duo album: a number of pieces feature Côté on piano as well, and the use of prepared piano lends the music textural variety and rhythmic solidity. Côté’s pieces, in addition to the Confluence suite, are the Gabriel Kahane-inspired 1190 Chemin de la Montagne and the sister pieces Muted Song and Hushed Song, all conceived for extensive improvisation with content and form.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Bourassa’s Tour 1 and Tour 2 bookend the album with Côté on soprano and tenor respectively, braiding together an engaging story. Three additional Bourassa pieces are featured in the program’s latter half: Chire reveals the influence of composer Steve Reich, while Truc begins and ends with percussive prepared piano. On Duty sounds stealthy, with staccato octaves ringing out until Côté interrupts on soprano with a haunting unison passage of stark intensity.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The five movement Confluence suite contains all of the projects possible instrumental combinations: two pianos, prepared piano, soprano and tenor sax. It’s all about water, and the places defined by its presence: place like The Forks in downtown Winnipeg; the spot in central Khartoum Where Blue Meets White and the two great branches of the Nile divide; the Ganges River in India, sacred in the Hindu tradition; Rideau Falls in Ottawa, Ontario; and finally, the largest island in Montreal’s Archipel d’Hochelaga. Tenor sax and piano bring the Confluence suite to a dramatic conclusion.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Confluence is released worldwide on ODD SOUND.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://philippecote.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://philippecote.com/</a><br /></span></p><p><a href="https://francoisbourassa.com/en/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: verdana;">https://francoisbourassa.com/en/</span></a><br /></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-80644448676658627432023-12-31T16:42:00.000+11:002023-12-31T16:42:04.736+11:00vocalist AurallaurA album release Exetastes - a delightful world jazz adventure penned by Laura Chu Wiens<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxSiAI4sLfCU3s1kwaEXp4Sl9lg0Rl1PSbBcLKl3ALKne2zXT9wZ6cjUeLLXaDDjk2uBTJHzrYKh3ko7RxDjrBeTMDY8kueT9yXSzrMdHxNtLO1M8pzwyj5jF9vGYFLobo7KrrzrIa1iitakwn-1WaiLbIq0hDYOd5FHffxZ081bCGmmVm1ldsi_ckf1E/s859/AurallaurA%20-%20CD%20Cover.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="811" data-original-width="859" height="302" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxSiAI4sLfCU3s1kwaEXp4Sl9lg0Rl1PSbBcLKl3ALKne2zXT9wZ6cjUeLLXaDDjk2uBTJHzrYKh3ko7RxDjrBeTMDY8kueT9yXSzrMdHxNtLO1M8pzwyj5jF9vGYFLobo7KrrzrIa1iitakwn-1WaiLbIq0hDYOd5FHffxZ081bCGmmVm1ldsi_ckf1E/s320/AurallaurA%20-%20CD%20Cover.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Laura Chu Wiens</b>, also known as <b>AurallaurA</b>, is a jazz <b>composer</b> and <b>vocalist</b>. She grew up in a biracial Chinese-American household, and having lived extensively overseas, is proficient in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Chu Wiens has studied and performed folk music in Chiapas, Mexico, township jazz in Cape Town, South Africa, Roma music in Belgrade, Serbia and Lisu minority folk music in Yunnan, China. Laura studied vocal jazz at Williams College, but her skills as a performer have been refined as a regular performing musician in the DC and Pittsburgh area over the last 17 years.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">She sings regularly with the group RML Jazz at festivals, performance venues and restaurants, and has previously fronted the big band The Jazz Conspiracy, Speak Low Jazz in the Washington DC region, and Lora and the Belgrade Boys in Serbia. Laura has also composed and performed vocal music for three BBC Radio 4 Dramas produced by the Prix Italia and Sony Gold Radio Academy Award-winning audio artist, Gregory Whitehead. Those pieces were broadcast nationally across the UK and at the Glasgow Radio Festival “Radiophrenia.”</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The <i>Exetastes</i> album is a tour-de-force, showcasing AurallaurA’s expansive global influences and jazz fluency. Original compositions on Exetastes spotlight the blues, Latin, funk, jazz waltz, and even traditional folk music from the Balkans, Appalachia and China, which are unified by Laura Chu Wiens’ distinctive narrative lyric-writing. Both the music and storylines on the Exetastes album evolve even over the course of a single song, grappling with both ambivalence and commitment at the crossroads of one’s life.Key collaborator, arranger and music engineer Greg Lutz is a GRAMMY-nominated music educator, and plays virtuosic solos on keys, sax, clarinet and flute. Bassist John Dahlman, who has performed over 50 times at the White House for five Presidents and toured with seven Broadway musicals, is also featured heavily on this album.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://aurallaura.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://aurallaura.com/</a><br /></span></p><div><br /></div>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-81346484011819636662023-12-22T15:11:00.002+11:002023-12-22T15:11:52.940+11:00A feast of holiday releases from prominent artists<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdvtXxEdjBLR53YraQKha5YGjW3oVtoTCnUi6dc4McM_7Cb8fwkLSutZIRTkLmgFDsiZvtmtHHNHkFwnxxg_LF6nXgeSjWZM1tCVdpm36cVf8lP_aLd9ZE32KUCO-YZ-wqZg0CYkKnd7NWAJsn3tBmCA7mOnWSwDDidKBvNyX0aK_H91701ZIdcH9hLSg/s612/xmas%20music.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="490" data-original-width="612" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdvtXxEdjBLR53YraQKha5YGjW3oVtoTCnUi6dc4McM_7Cb8fwkLSutZIRTkLmgFDsiZvtmtHHNHkFwnxxg_LF6nXgeSjWZM1tCVdpm36cVf8lP_aLd9ZE32KUCO-YZ-wqZg0CYkKnd7NWAJsn3tBmCA7mOnWSwDDidKBvNyX0aK_H91701ZIdcH9hLSg/s320/xmas%20music.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-family: verdana;">The Christmas and holiday season sees many artists releasing holiday related music. His credits include walking into a pin spotlight from a darkened stage at the St. James Theatre and opening the Broadway Musical “Swing,” which also includes four of his original tunes. He and his trio <b>Mood Indigo</b> appeared in the movie <i>Frances</i> starring Jessica Lange. Casey and Mood Indigo charmed Hollywood, entertaining the royalty of Tinseltown, becoming a frequent mention in George Christie’s Hollywood Reporter column “The Great Life.”</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Early career milestones include opening for Lily Tomlin at the Ice House in Pasadena, California (1971), playing accordion on a R. Crumb Cheap Suit Serenaders 78 (1973), performing with the Rubber Band on the Tonight Show (1974), recording with the Rubber Band for Atlantic Records (1975), playing keyboards with Bobby Caldwell (1976-77), was a contestant on The Gong Show (1977), performed music for movie Reborn, Dennis Hopper, (1980).</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>Love Letter</i> is a collection composed over the last 50 years, but freshly recorded between 2019 and 2022. A few of these tunes have been previously released, while the majority languished in file cabinets, on lead sheets, and on reels of tape. This retrospective incorporates a variety of musical genres, between and within songs. You will hear songs reminiscent of old time pop tunes and big band swing, as well as Latin jazz, bossa nova and funky soul. There are influences of ragtime, Broadway and even two pieces performed by a string quartet. Each of the 24 songs is a unique gem, yet the collection is cohesive. MacGill’s vocals and arrangements provide a continuous thread of his musical style.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.caseymacgill.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.caseymacgill.com/</a><br /></span></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-32507588004787514222023-12-08T17:18:00.002+11:002023-12-08T17:18:25.322+11:00Chicago's Stirrup new album release Picks Up The Thread <p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3qg4spFVjl8efko24XcWpUjgfnPUKnZAVF0IrpojmySDmSM6WOunPAtTZ4reSLP-ooUkY-Z9Aacnm3tmzBU3ZoZ8PyQuTYg-oYL0twJKibFycpjK7QDtyXryxauk539QSEETzXy45iq5T2srNGGHJ3vTCGTcKQlKPkqnXJWYdgRNsgB-CXwKLDeg0BJU/s3004/Stirrup_Cover_Art.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="3004" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3qg4spFVjl8efko24XcWpUjgfnPUKnZAVF0IrpojmySDmSM6WOunPAtTZ4reSLP-ooUkY-Z9Aacnm3tmzBU3ZoZ8PyQuTYg-oYL0twJKibFycpjK7QDtyXryxauk539QSEETzXy45iq5T2srNGGHJ3vTCGTcKQlKPkqnXJWYdgRNsgB-CXwKLDeg0BJU/s320/Stirrup_Cover_Art.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Stirrup</b>'s <i>Picks Up The Thread</i> is the genre-defiant trio’s fifth and latest album of all new compositions recorded live by audio specialist and recording ace, Ken Christianson at Pro Musica in Chicago. Using just a fistful of microphones, the session, live and open to the public, captures a distinct, fly-on-the-wall sound quality that places the listener amidst the band, in the room where it happened. This fresh batch of songs, some with the ink still wet, finds the group in search mode, getting into a huddle, then scattering to the far corners of the tune to find the corners and edges, then reporting back to the center with varied definitions of what the shape of the thing is. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Sometimes lyrical, sometimes chaotic, but always inquisitive and heat-seeking, <b>Fred Lonberg-Holm</b>’s cello playing is front and center, leading the charge and lighting the way with a torch. Or an arc welder. Or even by candlelight. <b>Charles Rumback</b>’s drumming surprises and disrupts - a classy, Roach brush work out tripping down a flight of stairs, always with a sense of forward Motian. And like a middle child, <b>Nick Macri</b>’s bass shapes help to settle the score - ostinato semaphores, shooting up flares to find a way up, over and out. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Formed in Chicago in 2009, the trio is a true collective with all three musicians writing and arranging with an emphasis on a unique, genre-defiant group sound. Exploratory, deep bass ostinatos, moody harmonies, strings shape-shifting from lyrical to noise, extended structures, and a dynamic rhythmic pulse are all jumping off points for the group with a wide range influences as varied as the list of bands and musicians Stirrup’s members have worked with including Anthony Braxton, Ron Miles, Ken Vandermark, Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier, Wilco, Ryley Walker, The Sea and Cake, Nina Nastasia, and Peter Brötzmann. The trio has performed in a wide variety of venues from art museums to indie rock clubs to European jazz festivals. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZT7dXJgkp2Fc5nPXyW8IZGp4HrZbuSYbQ5BN6ApxG5piSx3kHn9Tx-e62MXsUgAv4W87gMIVgWD0bXsGEjmmidveCAob-WSdH96sFk-xifLkUR7oGNwNg16_ygBv6I8B2BgKqh575qaWESOQV49nFDNNOx2-6_vX4rfHobw_N3ETYZXKNkiU5NhQi-20/s960/Stirrup-PHOTO-Live@MCA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZT7dXJgkp2Fc5nPXyW8IZGp4HrZbuSYbQ5BN6ApxG5piSx3kHn9Tx-e62MXsUgAv4W87gMIVgWD0bXsGEjmmidveCAob-WSdH96sFk-xifLkUR7oGNwNg16_ygBv6I8B2BgKqh575qaWESOQV49nFDNNOx2-6_vX4rfHobw_N3ETYZXKNkiU5NhQi-20/s320/Stirrup-PHOTO-Live@MCA.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;">released on <a href="https://www.earsandeyesrecords.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ears&eyes Records</a></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">BandCamp: <a href="https://stirrup.bandcamp.com/">https://stirrup.bandcamp.com/</a></span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">SoundCloud: <a href="https://soundcloud.com/stirrupchicago">https://soundcloud.com/stirrupchicago</a></span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">FaceBook: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/stirrupchicago/">https://www.facebook.com/stirrupchicago/</a></span></p><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-19504840125787351572023-12-02T13:31:00.003+11:002023-12-02T13:31:24.352+11:00swingin' and classy album from vocalist Mira Choquette entitled In Reel Time<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL0ulEIQVeDlDwbT18IR0s0E7A_qOpMHZC6UG5fxRL7YL-SDRaJBowOowrkWri0C8LYrSuxLX8EupN0ZtjQa0Ltew8BPhV3FAIJ12IqdQSQJrDvjX6lDggsWDNtkAZAB1iubckpncZ4eT52YsDAqCWFE4aDfFsQfWb70X-PzwqHW0X2o1OTSH1QrbNwb0/s1650/MIRA_FULLCover_050423.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1650" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL0ulEIQVeDlDwbT18IR0s0E7A_qOpMHZC6UG5fxRL7YL-SDRaJBowOowrkWri0C8LYrSuxLX8EupN0ZtjQa0Ltew8BPhV3FAIJ12IqdQSQJrDvjX6lDggsWDNtkAZAB1iubckpncZ4eT52YsDAqCWFE4aDfFsQfWb70X-PzwqHW0X2o1OTSH1QrbNwb0/s320/MIRA_FULLCover_050423.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">“You had to be there,” the saying goes. But in the case of <i>In Reel Time</i>, the new album by Montreal vocalist <b>Mira Choquette</b>, you'll feel like you were at the recording session even though you weren't. The album has the intimate feeling of something happening in your living room. Or, more accurately, in someone else's living room... because that's where it was recorded.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">"We did everything live at my house in Toronto," said bassist and producer Joshua Goldman. "All the musicians were in the same room, including Mira. The engineer, Timothy Doyle, was one room over.” Choquette said the entire session was spontaneous, noting that most of the songs on the album are first or second takes, recorded during three of the hottest days of the summer of 2022. That led to an interesting situation on the final day of recording...</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">"We did two days of everybody playing live," said Goldman. "And then we decided to do some vocal overdubs, too. That day was even hotter, so Mira ended up doing all of her overdubs naked in the hallway.” Said Choquette: "I had to do [Stevie Wonder's] <i>Overjoyed</i>, and there ain’t no way I can do <i>Overjoyed</i> with sweat beading down my back."</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Literal nakedness aside, the album also features real moments of emotional exposure. ”For me, half this album is a break-up album," Choquette said. "We were recording a block away from what had been our house, my partner’s and mine. <i>Ne me quitte pas</i> was really hard to do, as I had also lost my father not long before the recording. So half the album is about loss and half the album is songs of joy and love. It was very real: the heat wave, the heartbreak, being a block away, just being in a weird place."</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The joy shines through on songs like Harry Belafonte's <i>Jump In The Line</i> and a burning version of Cole Porter's <i>Just One Of Those Things</i>, which features Farncombe's piano to great effect, along with some first-class vocal improvisation from Choquette. There's also an original called <i>Love Crime</i>, co- written by Choquette and Goldman, that recalls the slow- dragging swing of the Basie band.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">All in all, it's an album that takes you on a ride, like the best records do. A paragon of both consistency and evolution, he continues to seek out new challenges for himself, his colleagues, and his growing community of listeners. After releasing his first solo piano album L’Impact du silence in 2021, Bourassa is back with <i>Swirl</i>, a new live <b>quartet</b> album.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Bourassa’s talent was initially recognized by the Festival international de jazz de Montréal in 1985, kickstarting his trio’s recording and performance career throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. In 1996, Bourassa’s trio joined forces with saxophonist and flutist André Leroux. Bourassa’s eponymous quartet has been a staple of Montreal’s artistic landscape for 25 years. The band features founding bassist Guy Boisvert, saxophonist André Leroux, and drummer Guillaume Pilote, the most recent addition to the group.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>Swirl</i> was recorded live at Studio Piccolo in Montreal on July 2nd and 3rd, 2022, capturing the energy and spontaneity that can only come from a live performance. The album features six original compositions by Bourassa, each showcasing the quartet's versatility and passion for jazz. From the mesmerising motifs of Pooloop to the explosive coda of 15 Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, listeners can expect a rich and engaging musical journey.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>Swirl</i> is released worldwide on Effendi Records.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHmV2wU3xN9rGZXTNyHkbc6WNFXnrjUvZFZ6aXSaZgiCVQbpynkPeNKcBf1tMIil4dQa59IWhrqGhTa55h6oInWPc71gN_yQUk0vzADoqH0Tj-mjkhUyHf-bjOq1SMq_uaPAJ7-NUQdVBDIuUCnXPbdf7GdRnydxOKo7fx0wlKQH41XVTlNrYVZ19Uo8E/s3840/Francois%20Bourassa%20Quartet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2160" data-original-width="3840" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHmV2wU3xN9rGZXTNyHkbc6WNFXnrjUvZFZ6aXSaZgiCVQbpynkPeNKcBf1tMIil4dQa59IWhrqGhTa55h6oInWPc71gN_yQUk0vzADoqH0Tj-mjkhUyHf-bjOq1SMq_uaPAJ7-NUQdVBDIuUCnXPbdf7GdRnydxOKo7fx0wlKQH41XVTlNrYVZ19Uo8E/s320/Francois%20Bourassa%20Quartet.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://francoisbourassa.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://francoisbourassa.com/</a><br /></span><p></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-17654190762440203582023-11-04T08:39:00.000+11:002023-11-04T08:39:03.079+11:00saxophonist, bassoonist, and composer Melissa Pipe album release Of What Remains<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTsTQTHMcrQM8PLAh0b4d7YjTrBR6lW4ywq7L3z7VjUiNyS-FjENXUWLkcpinCH9029RZaKXwzbJhb9eTtARlnZvrJ23j44gvRssiyyDgDk_QGZcZh5bxjeGpynPFWJw5yQ5tyj9qxdyux1g84HwX0yqPAag9chbT7JJt_9ki-ZSawq-XBe0wHZm1Gngs/s1675/Melissa%20Pipe%20Sextet_Of%20What%20Remains_album%20cover_for%20web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1590" data-original-width="1675" height="304" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTsTQTHMcrQM8PLAh0b4d7YjTrBR6lW4ywq7L3z7VjUiNyS-FjENXUWLkcpinCH9029RZaKXwzbJhb9eTtARlnZvrJ23j44gvRssiyyDgDk_QGZcZh5bxjeGpynPFWJw5yQ5tyj9qxdyux1g84HwX0yqPAag9chbT7JJt_9ki-ZSawq-XBe0wHZm1Gngs/s320/Melissa%20Pipe%20Sextet_Of%20What%20Remains_album%20cover_for%20web.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>Of What Remains</i> is Montreal baritone saxophonist and bassoonist<b> Melissa Pipe</b>’s first release as a leader. It explores ideas around temporality: the shifting of time, form and being. The pieces form a whole, joining together fragmentation, symbiosis, distillation, evaporation, and transience, while looking at what is left behind, or what remains.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">“The sextet's instrumentation allows me to write in both traditional jazz ensemble configuration (trumpet and saxes with the rhythm section) and in a “chamber jazz” format,” says Pipe about choosing the unique instrumentation and writing for her sextet. “The additional colour, timbre and orchestration possibilities of the bassoon and the bass clarinet are particularly effective in infusing elements of classical and folkloric music into the pieces”.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Her compositions here range from moody, atmospheric pieces to more traditional styles like a minor blues, but most tend to be on the darker, introspective side. “I write what I hear. Sometimes it starts with a bass line, a progression. Sometimes it’s a melody. The pieces on this album use a variety of jazz and classical compositional devices and techniques, but beyond the theoretical framework that I use to build its structures, harmonies, textures, etc. the most important thing for me is that it has to have soul. It has to be something my ear wants to hear. At times that can be something more modern, and at others something steeped in the jazz tradition: to me it goes beyond genres, it’s all about the soul of the thing.”</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia9rlKb7OdwYQPBMm4RNc66XhQTTvGrIlm6pUAYeCC2fuDHOyhf-QBEaj_b3nvsZAoz5QXVuj45lymWpxc-zTQRjTLhMc47xkL1wHaCMF1QQkaqgR_yQBercICuf0f6uXwZyDX4pU09zkMwlxqGjntiWk3FTG5k4V1xSqQu7rG_yFKcm_JIBXLPDB-uFE/s6720/Melissa%20Pipe_photo%20credit%20E%CC%81va-Maude%20TC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="6720" data-original-width="4480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia9rlKb7OdwYQPBMm4RNc66XhQTTvGrIlm6pUAYeCC2fuDHOyhf-QBEaj_b3nvsZAoz5QXVuj45lymWpxc-zTQRjTLhMc47xkL1wHaCMF1QQkaqgR_yQBercICuf0f6uXwZyDX4pU09zkMwlxqGjntiWk3FTG5k4V1xSqQu7rG_yFKcm_JIBXLPDB-uFE/s320/Melissa%20Pipe_photo%20credit%20E%CC%81va-Maude%20TC.jpg" width="213" /></a></div><a href="https://melissapipe.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: verdana;">https://melissapipe.com/</span></a><p></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-17443804693290959762023-10-31T17:20:00.005+11:002023-10-31T17:20:44.444+11:00CONVERGENCE - new release from the Nick Maclean Quartet feat. Evolution abounds throughout this 2nd recording, with greater cross-pollinated experimentation between genres (funk, hip hop, cuban), more sophisticated & intricate writing from Maclean's pen, and further exploration of Herbie Hancock's classic cannon.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">As per their first album, the depth of synergistic connectivity between the 4 hand-picked members of Maclean's quartet are again a cornerstone to the ensemble's sound and group dynamic. Maclean advances his examination of the modern jazz ethos here with a crew unafraid of taking risks in the pursuit of collective narrative exploration and personal expression.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Formed in </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">2016, Maclean's foursome delivers jazz between the two </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">poles of thoughtful introspection and powerhouse </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">conveyance, taking influences from Herbie Hancock's </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">primordial 1960's Blue Note era recordings which featured </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">Freddie Hubbard, while simultaneously evolving the </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">synergistic group investigations of their 1st recording.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://nicholasmaclean.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://nicholasmaclean.com/</a><br /></span></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-22523062150345292572023-10-23T10:45:00.001+11:002023-10-23T10:45:18.658+11:00vocalist Olivia Maisel debut album release A Moment in Time<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxBdDnx6i0-ATzLUBE8WJ4tfsKri7gwt4MIaCYmNnwgi0a7xo-4ZI5dxlLLxD4dNNfdsPAW6MFb1muu0sKWjFuIC3M6qPIrkZmeGIkXzIIeXCAXqkCiZwD5NA6aHOoWXQ2V0RWCEzH6xQa1xljMvydJclUmDAxs8ZwYu-XcwvF1BDBkEE0PLY2aZP7mDw/s1645/Cover%20Art%20-%20Olivia%20Maisel%20-%20A%20Moment%20in%20Time.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1497" data-original-width="1645" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxBdDnx6i0-ATzLUBE8WJ4tfsKri7gwt4MIaCYmNnwgi0a7xo-4ZI5dxlLLxD4dNNfdsPAW6MFb1muu0sKWjFuIC3M6qPIrkZmeGIkXzIIeXCAXqkCiZwD5NA6aHOoWXQ2V0RWCEzH6xQa1xljMvydJclUmDAxs8ZwYu-XcwvF1BDBkEE0PLY2aZP7mDw/s320/Cover%20Art%20-%20Olivia%20Maisel%20-%20A%20Moment%20in%20Time.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Toulouse-born, Montreal-based vocalist <b>Olivia Maisel</b>’s debut album <i>A Moment In Time</i> is a reflection of decades of personal experience. Maisel chose the songs based on the story she wanted to tell: "A story of unity, a past we hold in common, a present we could experience together, and a future of hope and change."</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Very early on in her process, Maisel created a storyboard for the album with the guidance of acclaimed, Grammy-nominated singer Kate McGarry. Those first steps set her on a path to create something truly personal. Maisel decided to tell her story using some of her favourite songs from the Great American Songbook, all while showcasing a few of her many different musical influences. The album evolved into a refuge and an outlet for her deepest feelings about her past. It stands as a tribute to relationships, love, loss, and life.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">For Maisel, the title of the album, <i>A Moment in Time</i>, is about learning to accept the present moment without needing to define it; acknowledging its existence, and letting it go. It is also a reminder that as time passes, feelings and perspectives inevitably change. Without giving too much away about her intentions behind the record, she hopes everyone will see a version of their own story here.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.oliviamaisel.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.oliviamaisel.com/</a><br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU4fd8LUmTSyZsiUMCiAiRTe4tsLRhR8G8bFX8j4QffJ5EzbkRiT4fawHm68g38BdrtCqwr-CgmauCylc6YNUPJp6YsWvB6u4SJGXjIF-AJR-w51PaHGyBfbyOwyhruPt2Bho4fKW7rFC6KrcHzQ6Jvu0kvDXrwekjKNF30OSV6Lo2rvB4FNZBNd6PT2s/s5760/Olivia%20Maisel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3840" data-original-width="5760" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU4fd8LUmTSyZsiUMCiAiRTe4tsLRhR8G8bFX8j4QffJ5EzbkRiT4fawHm68g38BdrtCqwr-CgmauCylc6YNUPJp6YsWvB6u4SJGXjIF-AJR-w51PaHGyBfbyOwyhruPt2Bho4fKW7rFC6KrcHzQ6Jvu0kvDXrwekjKNF30OSV6Lo2rvB4FNZBNd6PT2s/s320/Olivia%20Maisel.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-24398238476784957452023-10-18T16:40:00.000+11:002023-10-18T16:40:06.667+11:00Ilios Steryannis second album release Babylonia Suite<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaHFRgAkyyamnYOfpytPRJUPU_hSzmbeZVAt2Gq8XISJIUeTRCBndcACZ9ZGNBAWLV6UImD4WNPZ4Z9cHu_AVXWXZCY_lZIGoe4IdVsIibvBqeFB9xQWLNPkdwD7fC81XiAMhDDKZI01waIZ3YfWDreljkPwAI6TzfzTT_A8ad2R_UAZmthYeip543eW4/s720/Babylonia%20Suite%20CD%20cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaHFRgAkyyamnYOfpytPRJUPU_hSzmbeZVAt2Gq8XISJIUeTRCBndcACZ9ZGNBAWLV6UImD4WNPZ4Z9cHu_AVXWXZCY_lZIGoe4IdVsIibvBqeFB9xQWLNPkdwD7fC81XiAMhDDKZI01waIZ3YfWDreljkPwAI6TzfzTT_A8ad2R_UAZmthYeip543eW4/s320/Babylonia%20Suite%20CD%20cover.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Ilios Steryannis</b> is a jazz drummer and composer from Toronto, Canada. Ont.), who celebrates his 100th birthday in 2023. This album brings new life to vintage Nimmons compositions with brand new arrangements by Phil’s grandson, pianist, arranger and composer Sean Nimmons, who also contributes two beautiful new compositions of his own.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Generational features some of the finest musicians in Canada, including many JUNO Award winners. The Nimmons Tribute, led by Sean, is a group of Phil’s colleagues, former students, friends and family who have come together in a joyous celebration of Phil and his music.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Phil Nimmons is a huge part of Canada’s cultural legacy. He is one of Canada’s pioneering composers, and one of a handful of musicians who helped solidly establish the country’s status in the jazz world. Phil also helped launch several major initiatives that continue to support Canadian contemporary music today.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>Volume 2 – Generational</i> builds on the band’s first album, while showing more of the range and diversity in Phil’s writing. This album is a more personal undertaking for Sean Nimmons. Generational is inspired by the interconnectedness of our collective human family tree. In music and life itself, we hear the echoing voices of those who have come before us. By contributing our own voices to this dialogue, we join in an ongoing conversation that is united through our shared humanity, and further enriched by the unique quality of each new voice that joins in. Through careful listening and our own honest expression, we can honour our inter-generational similarities and differences, participating in the ever-evolving conversation of life.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.nimmonstribute.ca/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.nimmonstribute.ca/</a><br /></span></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-35160594598637286022023-10-11T15:22:00.000+11:002023-10-11T15:22:00.462+11:00bassist Aretha Tillotson album release Introducing Aretha Tillotson<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBwzovJsBPlRxTVQ114ctshpF9EMuSSpFaYRX2zxg6Rtats4_tFst5-3MRqEuiHR3GyEITNXvcoh5T3HMPQvE0une8SiPryxaDoAtHH-pCgUCJPsDGQHmKm_KhHtyG0LRljU2tQM0-IXtoOZydzw2RUz0fQiaYLhjNxNnkESSY9Ys5GiQWHUix2rk3Ipk/s3000/cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="3000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBwzovJsBPlRxTVQ114ctshpF9EMuSSpFaYRX2zxg6Rtats4_tFst5-3MRqEuiHR3GyEITNXvcoh5T3HMPQvE0une8SiPryxaDoAtHH-pCgUCJPsDGQHmKm_KhHtyG0LRljU2tQM0-IXtoOZydzw2RUz0fQiaYLhjNxNnkESSY9Ys5GiQWHUix2rk3Ipk/s320/cover.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><i>Introducing Aretha Tillotson</i> is an album that features sextet, quintet, quartet, trio, and duo ensembles. The album was born out of Aretha’s thesis project in her master’s at Berklee College’s Global Jazz program studying under Linda May Han Oh. With female under-representation from jazz programs across Canada, the compositions on this record set out to paint a musical portrait of stories of women teaching, studying, and living in art scenes in every pocket of the nation.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Interviewing intersectional women, Aretha asks how we can improve representation, inclusivity and safety within spaces in Canada. From there we get the musical portraits painted throughout <i>Introducing Aretha Tillotson</i>. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Joined by musicians from all over Canada, the album features the illustrious JUNO award winner Allison Au on alto sax, Jacob Do on tenor sax, Audrey Ochoa on trombone, Brendan McGrath on piano, and Joel Jeschke on drums. The record suggests a wide array of influences, from Monk to Ornette Coleman on the jazz axis, with modern jazz influences from Kris Davis to Joe Lovano, these stories are captured in a spectrum of styles. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">This album will be released under the Bent River Records label, engineered by Padraig Buttner-Schirner and mastered by Reuben Ghose. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The album will be officially released on October 20th.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.arethatillotson.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.arethatillotson.com/</a><br /></span></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-29703880182087055832023-10-06T14:55:00.003+11:002023-10-06T14:55:34.373+11:00 fluid and emotive album from drummer Dhaivat Jani entitled Sum // Parts<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidexDU3gElAG4gOfAqi8xDlLwztuUNbQVjQTD2rWUTTDZPpHUwrYsD2UXYhRhsVmPyr1osl3QFRlKdjkEnrGvkEu-u4aI3j4EXEFTM-KJu5aaStNPZyRBN6VcC_1c2Qwt4QicsmkcIjm0Gx5PuJWVLXuV_BlI4dpqRClY_6EIPOq783VAUp5jUe6zvsxM/s342/Sum%20__%20Parts_Album%20Cover_Low.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="340" data-original-width="342" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidexDU3gElAG4gOfAqi8xDlLwztuUNbQVjQTD2rWUTTDZPpHUwrYsD2UXYhRhsVmPyr1osl3QFRlKdjkEnrGvkEu-u4aI3j4EXEFTM-KJu5aaStNPZyRBN6VcC_1c2Qwt4QicsmkcIjm0Gx5PuJWVLXuV_BlI4dpqRClY_6EIPOq783VAUp5jUe6zvsxM/s320/Sum%20__%20Parts_Album%20Cover_Low.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Dhaivat Jani PLUS</b> is the brainchild of Toronto based composer, drummer and tabla player Dhaivat Jani. Day 21 and Peshkaar are driven by their distinctive North Indian rhythms; Unchain and It Might Rain fill the listener’s taste for rock without losing any of their improvisational edge; Kaleidoscope offers a novel listening experience with its polyrhythmic arrangement inspired by African rhythms.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.dhaivatjani.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.dhaivatjani.com/</a><br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXMTXWeCVxr2Ro43ECusGyeDKwr2V-Lnu7hRZ9PxbpLrQ6lPS4ZFwXctnQRmiN75fEL_QE2-eipmu3nTrcOqPn9SUFRSdz88hZRwfUWE5_c9SXEFogxSFBJcCvzVhyphenhyphenjs0hjAXoV0G_TuPc6hsb0ZtYw217dmU4EjxKHvoJkSKkuth0IR3AhREA_RQfU1w/s4032/Dhaivat%20Jani_2023_3%20.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXMTXWeCVxr2Ro43ECusGyeDKwr2V-Lnu7hRZ9PxbpLrQ6lPS4ZFwXctnQRmiN75fEL_QE2-eipmu3nTrcOqPn9SUFRSdz88hZRwfUWE5_c9SXEFogxSFBJcCvzVhyphenhyphenjs0hjAXoV0G_TuPc6hsb0ZtYw217dmU4EjxKHvoJkSKkuth0IR3AhREA_RQfU1w/s320/Dhaivat%20Jani_2023_3%20.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313846338423511369.post-2770466330403450222023-09-29T08:45:00.000+10:002023-09-29T08:45:35.861+10:00Peter Manning Robinson explores space and time on Disturbances EP<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyJb-bswVPB9IW11SD-gCDqTHXmSqySx_Pzrnyk3584xNKJzc-InSAeq1QwX_rEqTagC6vI41csQW1XQDjx71g0pyxmQ0y3TzmcuhTBwyTZVV0Z5YSZ2J2y_ipgUxWxLO8begzZHXGB5blCa7GFkbO5tibUX0gT0764e6qd_rr6ywm-0MgqO0DjbAPhO4/s2160/Disturbances%20-%20Peter%20Manning%20Robinson.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2160" data-original-width="2160" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyJb-bswVPB9IW11SD-gCDqTHXmSqySx_Pzrnyk3584xNKJzc-InSAeq1QwX_rEqTagC6vI41csQW1XQDjx71g0pyxmQ0y3TzmcuhTBwyTZVV0Z5YSZ2J2y_ipgUxWxLO8begzZHXGB5blCa7GFkbO5tibUX0gT0764e6qd_rr6ywm-0MgqO0DjbAPhO4/s320/Disturbances%20-%20Peter%20Manning%20Robinson.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Out October 20th, <i>Disturbances</i> invites the listener on an otherworldly experience blending jazz, electro-acoustic, and ambient instrumental together into one entertaining listen. Containing five tracks, each tune as described by Robinson serves as a "sonic disturbance", often leaning towards the abstract. Because of this ambiguity and the absence of lyrics, <i>Disturbances</i> allows room for open interpretation from whoever is in its pilot seat. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Peter Manning Robinson</b> is a pianist, Emmy and BMI award winning composer, and perhaps most notably, the inventor of The Refractor Piano™. Born in Chicago before relocating to the West Coast via Los Angeles, Robinson's foundations in classical structure and jazz improvisation have led him to tour with greats such as Ernie Watts, Phil Woods and Freddie Hubbard. With the help of director Klaus Hoch, the two have collectively produced four albums and multiple videos, including the soon to be released <i>Disturbances</i>.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="http://www.petermanningrobinson.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.petermanningrobinson.com/</a><br /></span></p>Martyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07782051095770351926noreply@blogger.com
